FHS Students Inducted into Tri-M Music Honor Society

On November 27, 2018, 18 Fairview High School students were inducted into the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

The Tri-M Music Honor Society is a program of the National Association for Music Education(NAfME), which focuses on creating future leaders in music education and music advocacy. Tri-M is the only music honor society for junior/middle school and high school students in the country. Tri-M recognizes students that have gone above and beyond both academically and musically. Tri-M also provides students leadership opportunities to make a difference in their community through music-based service projects. There are more than 2,100 chapters across 50 states and 15 countries. Tri-M involves more than 84,000 students in grades 6-12. Each year, student members contribute more than 750,000 service hours to their school and local communities and raise nearly $1 million for causes they care about.

Mrs. Hillery Needham, Director of Orchestras and Tri-M advisor  said, “I wanted to recognize the outstanding music students in our school and the importance of music education in shaping the leaders of tomorrow. and also highlight our music program and help students make an impact in our community through public performances and service projects. I wanted to motivate students to take on leadership roles within our chapter and develop key skills for future success.”

The Tri-M Music Honor Society recognizes freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors who achieved excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. To apply to the Fairview High School chapter of Tri-M, one must meet the scholarship criteria by earning a cumulative, unweighted grade point average of 3.0 or higher, and have participated in at least 2 semesters of a music course with a 3.0 grade point average in those music courses.

The selection committee assessed applicant’s scholarship, leadership, service, and character through an analysis of the information that students provided in the application form. They also reviewed two recommendation forms submitted by former or current teachers.
