6th Grade Elective Course Descriptions

Art 6: This exploratory course actively involves students in four units of study: drawing, painting, color theory, two-dimensional and three-dimensional design and sculpture. The activities will introduce and reinforce the basic elements of art (line, shape, form, color, space, texture and value) and the principals of design.

Asian Exploration: Asian Exploration is a historical and cultural exploration of Asia.  Students will develop a keener understanding of how Asia have evolved, as well as how people currently live in this area of the world.  Cultural traditions, education, food and religions will be discussed.

Broadway Bound – This is an exciting fun filled class for those destined for the stage!  Singing and dancing will be the central focus.  Learn new songs and choreography as well.

Creative Writing:  This course is designed to give students the opportunity to think and write creatively. The goal is to encourage students to love writing and to guide them as they hone their craft. It is through writing that life becomes more meaningful. Writing can clarify, heal, excite, encourage, remind, inspire, and make the world a better place. This class is the beginning for students to be a poet, a freelance writer, a storyteller, an essayist, a nonfiction writer, or whatever they choose to become as a writer. There will be many options presented to students. If you make the effort to write in this class you are assured a very good grade. This class is about exploring the different writing genres.

Physical Education: Physical Education is organized to include group games, individual and team sports activities. Motor skill development, lower game skills, and promotion of positive socialization will be the major objectives. The instructional program in sports may include soccer, swimming, volleyball, basketball, softball, and tennis.

Speech and Debate: This class will develop and improve public speaking, argumentative, and critical thinking skills in communication settings. Student will be able to connect real life ideas with different interactive ELA standards. Students will prepare and deliver speeches and participate in several of in class debates and forums on current topics. Techniques will be taught to control speech anxiety, and structure and organize information to present to a variety of audiences. As such, the fundamentals of physical and vocal delivery skills, use of language and gesturing, as well as listening skills will be learned. Students will learn the necessary skills to critique, analyze and question speeches and debates delivered by others.

STEAM:  In this course, students will have opportunities to explore their own interests while developing knowledge and skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. They will apply a design  process and use fabrication equipment like 3D printers to create solutions to problems. What they learn in this course will contribute to their overall academic success.

Once course selections are made, schedule changes are discouraged due to staffing assignments and class size. In some instances, a legitimate educational reason may exist to request a change. Please contact Nora Walsh prior to June 30, 2017 if you have questions about any type of schedule change.
