Middle School Students Excel at “Power of the Pen” Writing Tournament

On February 2, 2019, fifteen Mayer Middle School 7th and 8th graders participated in the Northern District Power of the Pen Tournament at Columbia Middle School. Twenty-one schools participated in the tournament, with 100 students writing in the 7th grade and 112 students writing in the 8th grade. The Writing Warriors were very successful at the tournament.

The 7th grade team placed 6th place out of the 21 schools. Nola F. (#17) and Maggie R. (#18) placed in the top 20 of the 7th grade division. Ella J. and Addison L. will be joining Nola and Maggie as Regional qualifiers. Ashley S. and Jenna S. also wrote highly scored stories to help the 7th grade team.

The 8th grade team also had an phenomenal showing at the district tournament. All started by Kelli W. being recognized in front of the packed gym for her 7th place finish and she will advance to the Regional Tournament. June P., Olivia H., and Nina J. also qualified for the Regional Tournament. Eva K. and Allison K. had a very strong showing and wrote some very inspirational stories.

After the tournament, all of the top rated stories were read for Best of Round and Director’s Choice awards, which honor the highest quality student writing. Lewis F. Mayer students took the honors 2 of the 3 rounds. 8th grader June P. won the honors for round one with her story “Paris” while 7th grader Maggie R. received the round two honors with her story “The True Meaning of Halloween.”

The writing team will be in action again February 23rd when they travel to Shaker Heights Middle School for the PenOhio District Tournament.

The Power of the Pen Northern Region Tournament will take place on Saturday, April 6, at Villa Angela St. Joseph High School at 18491 Lakeshore Blvd, Cleveland, OH 44119. The regional tournament runs on a similar schedule as the district tournament.
