Power of the Pen Teams To Compete at State Tournament; FHS Earns First Place in Regional Competition

On March 17, 2018, the Lewis F. Mayer Middle School and Fairview High School Power of the Pen teams competed at the North Central Regional PenOhio Tournament at Oberlin College.

The Fairview High School Varsity Team earned first place in the competition and will send three Varsity students and one JV student to the state competition in May.

High School students Cecilia R. placed 2nd and Anna H. placed 3rd as Varsity team writers, while Jasmine L. placed 6th for the Junior Varsity team.
The High School PenOhio State Competition is scheduled for Saturday, May 19 at Wooster College.

Both 7th and 8th grade teams were also very successful. The 7th grade team will be sending five students to the State Finals and the 8th grade team will be sending two students to the State Finals.

Middle school students June P. placed 9th and Alyssa W. placed 15th in their respective divisions. Both students have a piece or writing up for the “Best of the Best” award and both qualified for the State Finals.

The State Finals for middle school will be May 24 and 25 at Wooster College.

PenOhio is a writing league comprised of public, private and parochial schools across Ohio who want to see great literary talent inspired, challenged, and rewarded. FPCS aligns its teams to be anchored throughout Ohio’s Extended Writing and Reading Standards. The advisors challenge the students to bring their writing to life through a rich, socially-engaging experience.
