Treasurer's office wins two awards for excellence in financial reporting

Fairview Park Treasurer's Office wins awardMarch 22, 2023

This March, the Fairview Park City School District Treasurer’s Office received recognition for excellence in financial reporting.

On February 22, Ohio Auditor of State Keith Faber announced that the Fairview Park City School District was awarded the Auditor of State Award with Distinction for the Fiscal Year 2022 Audit and Annual Comprehensive Financial Report or ACFR.

On March 21, Jake Altman, the Northeast Regional Liaison to the Auditor of State, presented the award to Treasurer Rob Showalter and his staff at the Board of Education's regular meeting.

“Of the about six thousand entities that we audit across the state, two to five percent qualify for this award in a normal year,” Altman stated at the Board meeting. “It puts you in the top tier of entities. And it speaks to everyone in the district pulling together for fiscal excellence and to keep the books clean and keep the books available to the public.”

To be eligible, the audit must not contain any “findings for recovery, material citations, material weaknesses, significant deficiencies, Uniform Guidance (single audit) findings, or questioned costs,” according to the Auditor of State website.

“Every six months when I give my five year forecast, I always say my commitment to the taxpayers,” Fairview Park City School District Treasurer Rob Showalter said. “Which is to spend, record, and report your investment diligently, transparently and accurately. This award proves that we followed through on our commitment once again. And while it may be my name on the certificate, I must emphasize that it is truly a team effort.”

Showalter went on to thank his team members for their hard work and dedication to the district.

The Treasurer’s Office was also recognized by the Association of School Business Officials International with a Certificate of Excellence for outstanding financial reporting for its 2022 fiscal year ACFR. For 50 years, ASBO has recognized school districts for high-quality financial reporting and transparent stewardship of public funds.

“The Association of School Business Officials International is a group of our peers,” Showalter said at the March 21 Board meeting. “Our report is taken a look by other school treasurers, other business officials, and graded and given some feedback. We put that feedback in our next year’s report.”

Showalter noted that the district was waiting to hear back from the Government Finance Officers Association regarding other recognition.

“If we get that third one, that’s kind of the triple crown or the third of three of our awards,” Showalter expressed. “We were very pleased to announce two of those tonight.”
