On Saturday, March 11, Lewis F. Mayer Middle School students attended the Power of the Pen regional competition at Baldwin-Wallace University. Both the seventh and eighth grade teams received numerous accolades. Three students placed in the top-ten at regionals, and five students are headed to the state tournament in May, held at Ashland University.

Here are some highlights from the regional competition:

• The eighth grade team won first place in the team competition
• Both the eighth grade team and seventh grade (combined) finished in third place in the sweepstakes
• Kathleen S. placed 9th in the eighth grade individual competition, automatically qualifying for the state competition.
• Wudassie G. placed 10th in the eighth grade individual competition, automatically for the state competition.
• Vance S. placed 5th in the seventh grade individual competition, automatically qualifying them for the state competition.
• Eighth grader Jane S. qualified for the state competition
• Seventh grader Addison P. qualified for the state competition.
