Fairview High School celebrated 59th annual Scholars' Reception

2024 Fairview High School ScholarsMay 15, 2024

On Wednesday, May 8, 2024, Fairview High School celebrated the achievements of its graduating seniors at the annual Scholars’ Reception. This year was the 59th anniversary of the awards event.

“The Scholars’ Reception is truly a testament to the incredible potential that resides within our student body,” Fairview High School Principal Chris Vicha stated. “Seeing so many of our brightest minds recognized for their hard work and dedication is an absolute joy.”

This year, 45 seniors were recognized with 42 different scholarships and grants, totaling $202,600. Many of the scholarships and grant awards were by local community organizations, including the Fairview Park Education Foundation, Fairview Park Women’s Club, Fairview Park Youth Association, Fairview Park PTA, alumni groups, O’Neill Healthcare, and more.

"We look forward to the Scholars’ Reception every year because it gives us the opportunity to celebrate the academic success of our students,” Superintendent Keith Ahearn said.

One notable addition to this year’s ceremony was the inclusion of the 2024 Polaris FHS Trade Students Grant Program. Established in 2024 by the alumni of the FHS classes of 1971, 1973, and 1982, this grant opportunity promotes and supports graduating seniors who are pursuing careers in welding, precision CNC machining, HVAC/R, construction, and automotive.

Each student awarded a Polaris grant received $300 in tools or equipment relevant to their chosen career path.

“Working with Polaris and having several meetings with principals, we thought, what if we give students something that would help them when they go into that career and work,” Fairview Park Education Foundation President Denise Devine explained. “When they’re going into a job, they have a list of things they need, which is money out of their pocket. We decided that giving them a tool to help them would be a good idea.”

“We are so lucky to have such strong community partners providing local student scholarships,” Ahearn added. “The event honors the legacy of alumni of Fairview Park City Schools who, through their scholarships, invest in the future success of soon-to-be alumni."

Devine noted that each year, she is impressed with the academic accomplishments of high school seniors and the numerous clubs, activities, organizations, and community groups each student participates in.

“It’s just a great day,” Devine expressed. “Each year, I’m awestruck by all that they have accomplished, including where they are going and what they have done only in their high school career. They excel in everything they’re doing. They do sports and community stuff. They take Advanced Placement and College Credit Plus classes. It’s just terrific. To be able to stand up there and hand out 39 different awards to these kids is just great. We’re helping them start their futures in college or at work.”

“As we awarded those scholarships, I couldn't help but feel immense pride,” Vicha said.  “It’s not just in our students' accomplishments but in the collective effort of our entire community to uplift and empower the next generation of leaders. Moments like those are why I am so grateful to be a part of this school and community.”
